"Brains AND Brawn" Adirondack Railroaders

MOVING a caboose BY HAND? Plenty of brawn needed! This "special move" was accomplished by tough-as-nails Adirondack railroaders on June 5, 2024 when a caboose, painted in Conrail colors, was hand-pulled out of a siding in Thendara NY. The caboose was to be used as a shoving platform (once the Utica-Tupper Lake tie train reached Sabattis) for a twenty mile shove to Tupper Lake. This video captur...

"Ghosts of Railroading Past: Rome NY's New York Central Station"
Переглядів 1,6 тис.21 день тому
Built in 1912 by the mighty New York Central Railroad, Rome NY's passenger station was a gem of a structure along the famed "Water Level Route." Last staffed in the early 1980's, time took its toll on the old station as rail passenger service began its long, slow decline. Nearly abandoned by Amtrak, the City of Rome eventually took ownership of the venerable station and commenced a major renova...

On May 25, 2024, I rode Adirondack Railroad's Thendara-Big Moose NY trip which happened to be the "season opener" for this particular train. In fact, I was the first rider to buy an in-person ticket for this run at the Thendara station. Scenes include interior views of the Thendara Station, a walk-through the yard, on-board views from the Adirondack's open air car, a look inside the cab of No. ...

On May 4, 2024, my trusty canine companion Witold (vee-told) and I headed up to Big Moose NY to video a New England Rail Excursions (NEREX) charter at the summit (2040 feet) of Adirondack Railroad's line. This point was also the summit of New York Central's Adirondack Division as well as the highest elevation reached on any mainline tracks operated by this "fallen flag." Northbound and southbou...

Spoiler alert: no Bugs were squished in the making of this video. Also included are street-running sce...

Each spring rail traffic to the big mills in Sangerfield & Waterville NY spikes. The railroad carries farm supplies, primarily fertilizer (probably feed and seed too I'd imagine), helping farmers' bottom lines as rail transport is cheaper than trucking. This video, made on April 8, 2024, catches the big train (for the Utica branch this way), as it heads through Clayville, Paris Station and on i...

Behind 3040: CSX 2722, 3 empty boxcars & 7 covered hoppers consigned to customers in Waterville and Sangerfield. Next, 6 miles farther south we catch the freight in...
"Unscheduled Stop, Special Orders?" Amtrak Rome NY

Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited is not scheduled to stop in Rome NY. This train runs from Chicago to New York City (with a Boston section that is switched off in Albany) and usually blasts by the Rome station at about 70 mph or a tad higher. However, on March 30, 2024, the eastbound Lake Shore DID stop in Rome to allow the conductor to walk up to deliver some papers to the engineer, a practice hark...

"The Big Climb" Adirondack Railroad
I have to come to new York to see this in person one day
I love the railroad switch in the road the conductor throws I always wanted to work for the railroad long time ago
As someone from Tupper Lake, I'm glad to see the the railroad come alive. I was lucky to be able to take a closer look at the train featured in the video (There's a neighborhood where the train was easily visible), and it looked like was just left to rot there, even though it was newly there. It has since moved elsewhere
Hello Railroading Rambler, Have a nice day! Thanks for the Brewery video, I've been waiting for it! Is Witold all right? I wish you a pleasant summer from Budapest, Hungary!
Hi from Southern Oregon. Thank you for taking me along with you & Witold. Beautiful trip!
That street switch on Schuyler St is one of the coolest pieces of railroad technology EVER...I wonder what company made it? Where do they get parts? What is it's maintenance procedure? That thing has to to be a nightmare, but I love it! Thanks RR for another great video!
The switch was built new back in 1988 during the last big track project on Schuyler Street (welded rail put in). It was based on a 1938 design for street railways. The president of our local NRHS chapter was the project engineer. Seems like the railroad is always fussing with that switch but it appears to be in good working condition nowadays. Glad you liked the video, thanks for commenting!
Amazing, the brewery still uses rail service, while so many have gone to trucks.
See that lead engine color scheme a lot here in Chicago daily !!!
That’s my train 🚂, 448/48 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 !!!
My Old Hometown from 1984 til 1991 !!! Had family there (all deceased except for 2 sisters & 2 cousins). Just got off the Lake Shore Limited couple of days ago going to New York City (New Jersey actually for my vacation). Anyway I use to hang out down there & got to know the Amtrak Ticket Agents who worked there (I think 🤔 they’re all retired now), hang out in the book store there, watch the endless parade of Conrail Freights pass thru the station !!! When I was there, 448/48 was always late coming no matter the season & rode in 1988 to Chicago for the summer to see family, 1991 to live permanently in Chicago. I now live in Northwest Indiana (next door to Chicago) but it’s good to see videos of my old stomping grounds, keep up the good work 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 !!!!
Maybe it's a trick of the camera, but it looks like you're standing very close to the track yourself. Do be careful about that -- trains do sometimes drag stuff along with them that can cause serious injury or death if you end up tangled in them. The biggest risk is loose straps on flat cars and centrebeams, which doesn't seem to apply on this line, but it's still a good idea to stand back.
Can we all take a moment to appreciate the fact that the engineer obeyed the traffic signal at the intersection?
Watching from York, UK - thanks for another great video, I always enjoy watching the brewery switch! Just the one car in today and none to take out; I hope the brewery's still doing good business!
Business is booming for the brewery!
@@railroadingrambler218 Thanks - good to know!
Thank you
I appreciate the respectful distance while Ethan is switching and de-derailing. But it'd be neat to see up close where he throws the switch and see the rails actually move. I'm sure he'd loan you the keys and you could play around with it :). It seems that the derail is kinda redundant here, but I don't know railroad protocols. Also, I wonder what they're taking in by the railcar - probably not "hops" or "barley" but something I've never heard of, and probably caustic.
Nothing caustic, malt I think. The derail went in following a system-wide safety reevaluation following an incident in 2015 when a juvenile released the brakes on a covered hopper. The hopper was on a siding approx 1 mile south of the brewery switch. It jumped a derail, rolled down Schuyler St at approx 40MPH, crossed Oriskany Blvd, ran through the Susquehanna yard, then smashed into a display steam engine (former NY Central 6721, a 0-6-0 switcher) nearly causing the collapse of an overhead walkway over the CSX main. Here's a look at the damage: ua-cam.com/video/dJmQS5ZsiJA/v-deo.html
@@railroadingrambler218 Wow. Looks like the siding the hopper started on was taken out of service in 2018, if I'm looking at the right place on streetview ("Joe Tahan's Furniture..."). Joe has no loading dock anyway.
Another great video! I like the way the motion detector lights on the ceiling go on and off as the engine passes thru. And is that a smoke detector activating due to the exhaust smoke? Must get pretty nasty in there!
You made this old retired engineers day. Thanks for the switching video. 👍❤️
With the exception of the street trackage the spotting of malt cars in Milwaukee was daily if not three times in 24 hours at some locations. Today only Miller Brewing is left and is on a nondescript straight away so time for a cold beer in Utica to enjoy that Timeless scene. Try to keep yourself cool and hopefully Bitold is pacing himself even if it means going to the basement
Hey rail rambler always fun watching UT1 switching customers. Hope one day they start using line all the way to Binghamton.
I just love streetrunning! Thanks for sharing!
Any other vehicles load in/out at that door? I wonder if the derail cap gets banged up with other vehicles/snowplow..
Believe it or not, I’ve seen 18 wheelers back up inside that building.
Greatly filmed, thanks for showing and best regards from Germany
Always enjoy seeing the action at Door 18. Hope Witold is handling the hot weather OK. Cheers from Wisconsin!
I always enjoy seeing the brewery getting cars switched. Do you know if there used to be any other rail connected industries off that street in the past?
Oh #3040 you have a lovely set of bugles.
NYS&W Railway? is this for the benefit of us this side of the pond? Great video as usual, greetings from the middle of England😉🙃
Little do they know the railroad has every right to take the road OUT.
LOVE to see them switch here, so cool! Thanks for sharing it.
Where's Witold?
awesome....how often do they drop at the brewery?..and do they normally have runs on the weekends? im about 2+ hours away and would love to see them come down main street in person
It’s strictly a M-F schedule for the Utica branch with switch moves usually occurring once per week; unfortunately, there is no set schedule for this move.
#3040 making a delivery to the brewery always makes for a good video!!
Love watching these cars spotted. Nice crew too!
Hello R.R. & Witold, sure is a scorcher up there today. Hope you are trying to stay cool. You & Witold take it easy.
Indoors railroading !
That was pretty close
Thanks for a Great video! Not much room left over coming and going through the brewery door.
What kind of phone tripod do you use???
Nothing has changed in the past 11 years switching Matts. Except for that we didn't have the derail, and we could only spot the cars with three pockets, not four.
These ones that you film at the brewery are my favorite.
Sure was a hot one today. Great footage John. By any chance do you know what the writing is printed on the right side by the rear steps at the end of the yellow striping? Cant make it out and never noticed it before. Just wondering. Thanks and keep em coming.
It's leasing information, but I can't find a photo clear enough to get the exact wording. Perhaps someone in the area could "ramble" over and get us a closeup?
"Subject to a lease agreement recorded with the Surface Transportation Board".
Those of us in the Utica area have some of the coolest railroading in the WORLD! Lots of pets to Witold.
That's just epic
Excellent video from Morrisville NY.
Love this stuff! THANKS!
Nice view of their switching!!! Thanks for sharing!
Greetings from Tonawanda where it’s going to reach 90 or so. Stay cool if you can.
Wow that was pretty cool! Always wanted to see how far they went into the brewery. Hope you and Witold are staying cool. Thanks for the video 👍👍👍
Looking in from North Yorkshire, England.
Fantastic Film 🎥
Is it possible to get permission to follow the train inside when they do the drop off? At the very end when the locomotive was way up the street it sounded like there was a train over your left shoulder! 🤠 You have captured this move several times and I watch everyone of them, thank you!
